About City

Budapest is Hungary's capital and the country's most populous city. It is the ninth most populous city within the European Union, based on internal metropolis limits. The city is expected to have a population of 1,752,286 people living on a land area of around 525 square kilometres (203 rectangular miles). Budapest, which is both a town and a province, is the focal point of the Budapest metropolitan region, which spans 7,626 square kilometres (2,944 square miles) and has a population of 3,303,786, accounting for 33 percent of Hungary's population.

Budapest's history began when a pre-Roman Celtic settlement became the Roman city of Aquincum, the capital of Lower Pannonia. Although the Hungarians arrived in the region in the late 10th century, the territory was ravaged by the Mongols in 1241–42. Throughout the fifteenth century, restored Buda became one of the focal points of Renaissance humanist culture. The Battle of Mohacs, which took place in 1526, was viewed through the lens of over 150 years of Ottoman rule. Budapest also became the co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a magnificent energy that lasted until 1918, when World War I ended.

The city was a key player in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, the Battle of Budapest in 1945, and, more recently, the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.

Budapest is a Beta+ global metropolis with strengths in business, finance, media, craftsmanship, style, research, innovation, education, and entertainment. In 2014, Hungary's monetary focus was ranked as Europe's second fastest growing urban economy. Budapest is home to the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, the European Police College, and the China Investment Promotion Agency's main foreign headquarters.
